November 2018 Newsletter

New reports in pedestrian safety; CPS recommendations for self-driving vehicles; complimentary downloads; safer driving and more

As Thanksgiving approaches, we are reminded of how grateful we are to have spent over two decades working with amazing, passionate individuals like you to help keep people safer and healthier. We look forward to many more years of working together.

For some of us, a host of season-specific safety knowledge is about to come into play: wood stoves start glowing; snow and sleet and ice make walking, biking and driving less safe; it’s dark by noon (just kidding); and even the warmer states can be affected by severe weather and an influx of tourists hoping to thaw out for a few days.

To help you easily find I'm Safe items for specific seasons and events, we've added an “EVENTS” drop-down menu on the main
page of our website.
Please check it out and let us know how we can help you plan for your next event!

Have a fabulous Thanksgiving,

- Wendy, Jamie & the I’m Safe Team

NEWS

The NTSB has released a complete report on pedestrian safety that incorporates recommendations on vehicles, infrastructure and how to better collect and share data between the CDC, NHTSA and the Federal Highway Administration. The last time the NTSB provided this sort of comprehensive report on pedestrian safety was in the 1970s. Read more here.

Healthcare and public health professionals can play a central role in promoting walking, biking, and healthy, active communities according to a new report from the Safe Routes to School National Partnership. The report outlines how public health stakeholders and transportation professionals can collaborate. See the report here. Sign up for the free webinar on November 27 here.

Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital found a powerful correlation between teenagers getting less than 6 hours of sleep each night and making poor choices (like using alcohol or drugs or drinking and driving). These teens also were more likely to consider suicide and use self-harm as a coping mechanism for increased anxiety and depression. Read the article here.

Child Passenger Safety and Autonomous Vehicles: Safe Kids Worldwide brought together a 17-member panel of experts to provide recommendations to ensure the safety of children in Autonomous Vehicles. Read more here.

How likely are you to be bitten by a dog? No one wants a dog bite over the holidays, or any time of year. According to the CDC, nearly 1 in 5 people require medical attention after being bitten by a dog. Here are some tips from the CDC about how to behave around dogs – 36% of us have one.  We also offer research-based materials to help keep dogs safe and keep people safe around dogs.

Several states have recently implemented strict laws about remaining hands-free while driving, not just a texting ban. Georgia, Rhode Island and Oregon have seen significant reductions in texting while driving within months of the laws going into effect, which may empower more states to pass similar legislation. I'm Safe impaired and distracted driving awareness products are 10%* off this month. And here are 100 distracted driving facts & statistics for 2018 you can share with anyone who still insists “it’ll be okay."

Crashes have increased in states with retail sales of marijuana according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). New research from IIHS and the Highway Data Safety Institute compared police-reported crash rates to insurance claim rates and arrived at an increase of between 5-6% across Colorado, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. Read more here.

If your state has or is considering legalizing marijuana, this month is a great time to check out our “Up in Smoke” lines.

Bicyclists who drive are better drivers . . . Analysis revealed by a UK insurance company (and at least one other study) concluded that cyclists who drive are better drivers than motorists who don't. The company offers lower insurance rates to cyclists due to the fact that only 6% make claims, vs. 13% of non-cyclists that are also insured by the firm.
