The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has announced an update to their Child Passenger Safety policy after an in-depth examination of the evidence. The recommendation for rear-facing now reads: "All infants and toddlers should ride in a rear-facing car safety seat (CSS) as long as possible, until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their CSS’s manufacturer. Most convertible seats have limits that will permit children to ride rear-facing for 2 years or more." Read the  AAP CPS Policy Statement here. Read the Technical Report here.

Most I'm Safe materials have been updated for consistency with the revised AAP policy, although the revisions are not yet on the I'm Safe web site. Please call or send email for more information.

Children's Advil recalled ... Pfizer Consumer Healthcare has issued a recall for the four ounce bottles of bubble gum-flavored Children's Advil due to a mismatch between the units in the dosage instructions and the units on the dosage cup. The difference could result in a potential overdose. Read more here.

Fire Prevention Week is October 7-13 ... This year's theme is "Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware - fire can happen anywhere." The theme raises awareness of the "essential ways people can reduce their risk to fire and be prepared." NFPA resources can be found here. For affordable, customized materials that promote your department, click here.

ATV Study: Do public safety campaigns make a difference? Children from ages 14 to 17 are nearly three times more likely to sustain ATV-related injuries compared to the national average, according to Joey Johnson, MD. Dr. Johnson is an orthopedic surgeon and author of "Trends in all terrain vehicle injuries from 2000 to 2015 and the effect of targeted public safety campaigns." Read more here.
