Back To School Child Safety

As July turns to August, we know that summer will soon give way to fall and with that comes a return to school. Now is a perfect time to focus on Back to School Child Safety campaigns and events.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration helps shed light on the importance of Pedestrian Safety during the school year – and all year round. Back to School Safety checklists can also be helpful for families that a preparing for a new school year; and the National Safety Council provides a terrific one that highlights the importance of Walking to School, Riding To School, Driving Your Children to School, Preventing Backpack-Related Injuries, and Preventing Playground-Related Injuries.

Safe Kids Worldwide notes that unintentional pedestrian injuries are the 5th leading cause of injury-related death in the United States for children ages 5 to 19; with teens now having a death rate twice that of younger children.

Stop Bullying also provides opportunities to learn how to identify bullying and stand up to it safely, acknowledging that when adults respond quickly and consistently to bullying behavior, they send the message that it is not acceptable.
