Ridesharing barriers to child passenger safety ... Families who travel over the holidays may experience issues with car seat use in rideshare vehicles. In 34 states, for-hire vehicles like taxis, Lyft and Uber are not required to follow their state's child restraint laws. Researchers at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, Texas A&M transportation Institute and San Diego State University examined CPS laws, surveyed parents and ran focus groups to determine "what hinders parents from using child safety seats while traveling in rideshare services." Read more here.

Safer streets through Tactical Urbanism ... Also known as DIY Urbanism or Planning-by-Doing, Tactical Urbanism focuses on flexible and short-term projects to improve street safety and public spaces. Inhalant abuse is shockingly common but often overlooked. A tragic  crash in Wisconsin underscores the dangers. We want to raise awareness of just how dangerous “huffing”, “sniffing”, “dusting” and “bagging” really are. NHTSA's Fans Don't Let Fans Drive Drunk Super Bowl Campaign ... From Banner Ads to Fact Sheets, Press Releases and Social Media Messages, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) has released marketing materials to raise awareness of the dangers of drunk driving on Super Bowl weekend (February 2-3, 2019). Need data? WISQARS now offers fatal injury data in an interactive, visual format ... The CDC announced new ways of viewing information from the WISQARS database, allowing researchers, the media and the public to visually compare causes of death in charts, graphs and maps. The CDC's WISQARS (Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System) provides fatal and nonfatal  injury data to help identify trends and inform program and policy decisions. Learn more here. The CDC also announced that WISQARS now includes 2016 data from the National Violent Death Reporting System.

Youth mental health presents new issues for hospitals and community providers ... A survey of more than 100 children's hospitals found a 4.6% increase in the average daily census in behavioral health units over the past year. While making tremendous strides in improving physical health for children,  the Children's Hospital Association notes "acute shortages of pediatric behavioral health clinicians, community-based programs and inpatient beds" at a time when teenage depression and suicide rates are high and medication use for learning-related challenges is widespread.
